Endangered languages documentation: from standardization to mobilization
نویسنده
چکیده
Currently, the main arena for computer-based linguistic contribution towards endangered languages is in data encoding and standardization. This phase urgently needs to be complemented by a period of working out how to deliver computer-based language support to endangered language communities. Established linguistic practice has neither sufficiently documented nor strengthened endangered languages; Himmelmann (1998) identified this problem and proposed a new discipline he called documentary linguistics. Although this emerging discipline has stimulated digital projects for data standardisation, encoding, and archiving, it lacks two vital aspects: a methodology that provides roles for community members, and new genres of dissemination. Without identifying new ways to mobilize the products of documentation, documentary linguistics will remain indistinguishable from its predecessors in its ability to support language communities.

Language Documentation, as defined by Himmelmann (2006), aims at compiling and preserving linguistic data for studies in linguistics, literature, history, ethnology, sociology. This initiative is vital for endangered languages such as Occitan, a romance language spoken in southern France and in several valleys of Spain and Italy. The documentation of a language concerns all its modalities, cove...
متن کاملA Conceptual Framework for Developing e-Learning Materials from Endangered Language Documentation
Preservation of an endangered language is an important and difficult task. The preservation project is proposed to include documentation, archiving and development of shared resources for the endangered language, with an underlying goal of language revitalization among the younger generation. In this paper, we propose a framework that connects three different tasks related to language documenta...
متن کاملEndangered Language Documentation: Bootstrapping a Chatino Speech Corpus, Forced Aligner, ASR
This project approaches the problem of language documentation and revitalization from a rather untraditional angle. To improve and facilitate language documentation of endangered languages, we attempt to use corpus linguistic methods and speech and language technologies to reduce the time needed for transcription and annotation of audio and video language recordings. The paper demonstrates this...
متن کاملAnnotating Linguistic Data with ImageSpace for the Preservation of Endangered Languages
Many languages are in serious danger of being lost and as a result, there has been a significant increase in language documentation projects, and also in attempts to preserve language documentation via the use of digital technologies. We are developing a distributed digital library for endangered languages which will contain various data of endangered languages in the forms of text, image, vide...
متن کاملTowards a Common Conceptual Framework of Language Documentation
Language represents shared conventionalization of concepts by all speakers. Hence language documentation preserves information far beyond a collection of sound shapes, lexical forms, and grammatical structures. The preservation of linguistically conventionalized conceptual structure is even more crucial for endangered language since this information is very often not available elsewhere. Howeve...
